Tosca suspects her lover Caravadossi of having an affair with another woman. In reality, the painter is hiding a fugitive prisoner from the clutches of the police chief, Baron Scarpia. When Caravadossi's complicity is proven, Scarpia dares to blackmail Tosca in order to obtain her favours.
