The Zurich Opera House is coming to cinemas across the canton, bringing the magic of the stage to the big screen with its Opera Cinema Day. The event kicks off on 16 November with the premiere of Engelbert Humperdinck's fairy tale opera ‘Hansel and Gretel’, which will be broadcast live from the Grand Hall of the Opera House. Interviews with artists and behind-the-scenes glimpses provide additional exciting insights – a special experience for the whole family.

The story of the siblings Hansel and Gretel, who get lost in the forest and are in danger of falling prey to the gingerbread witch, has always been a favourite in opera form. The music takes up well-known folk melodies and combines them with large, dazzling soundscapes between dream and reality, fears and fantasies. Zurich director Thom Luz has received numerous awards for his theatre work. With ‘Hansel and Gretel’, he tells the story from a child's perspective and unfolds the poetic power of the theatre machinery.
