Elsa of Brabant is accused of having killed her brother by Frederick of Telramund. The latter claims the Duchy of Brabant, encouraged by his wife Ortrude, a witch from the North. A mysterious knight arrives from the river escorted by a swan and offers to defend Elsa's honor on one condition: that she never asks him to reveal his identity.
