Lucia Ashton and Edgardo Ravenswood pledge love and loyalty to each other in defiance of the obvious enmity between their families. Lucia's brother Enrico has other plans for her: to satisfy his own personal interest, and while Edgardo is away in France, he presents his sister with false accusations against the man she loves and forces her to sign a marriage contract with Arturo Bucklaw.
